Stan Newens Bursary

Stan Newens (who passed away in 2021) was Harlow’s MP from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1983. He also was a founder member of Harlow Health Centres Trust and served for many years, and in both roles contributed significantly to Harlow’s health and wellbeing. The Harlow Health Centres Trust is very pleased to name this bursary in recognition of Stan’s contribution to Harlow, and as a means of opening up access to Higher Education, to those who might otherwise be excluded because of cost.

Harlow Health Centres Trust is the charity which holds in trust and manages the Health Centres originally provided for the new town by the Nuffield Foundation Trust. It manages Harlow’s GP surgery buildings and distributes charitable funding into the local health and wellbeing community.

Applications for the 2026 Stan Newens Bursary are now closed. The first Stan Newens Bursary was awarded in 2024 to support local residents pursuing a higher-level university course.

Information about the next bursary round will be published at the beginning of 2028.

Previous Recipient – Carolyn Smith

One of our 2024 Stan Newens Bursary recipients, Carolyn Smith, recently completed her Master’s degree in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Carolyn graduated on 1st December at the Barbican Centre and has shared the following thank-you with the Trustees:

Dear HHCT Trustees,

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the Stan Newens Bursary that enabled me to successfully complete my Master’s degree in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. Your generous support played a crucial role in my academic journey and allowed me to fully engage with my studies.

I was proud to graduate on 1st December at the Barbican Centre, an achievement that would not have been possible without the financial assistance provided through this bursary. The opportunity to complete this qualification has been both professionally and personally transformative.

Building on my existing qualifications as a teacher, alongside my newly acquired knowledge and skills in child and adolescent mental health, I plan to work directly with children, adolescents, and their families. My aim is to support them through challenging periods by educating them on practical tools and strategies that promote emotional wellbeing and resilience.

Furthermore, I have applied to undertake a PhD in order to continue researching mental health in children and adolescents. Through this work, I hope to contribute to early education, intervention, and support, with the long-term goal of reducing mental health difficulties by addressing them from a young age.

Thank you once again for your generosity and belief in my potential. Your support has had a lasting impact on my career path, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity you have provided.

Yours sincerely,

Carolyn Smith
